Macfarlanes Career Wednesday

*The Life Cycle of a Training Contract*

On 27th November our very last careers wednesday of the semester is being hosted by Macfarlanes - a unique firm at the top of their game who truly present a different stance on commercial law. There will be wine, snack and pizza so make sure to join us!

Macfarlanes is a Silver Circle firm with a great variety to their work. The Holborn based practice spans from classic corporate work all to that for high net worth private clients. For students looking for a more personable and unique experience, Macfarlanes certainly provides this in what is still a first class law firm.

Despite being something of traditionalists, Macfarlanes are pushing hard to push their previously un-inclusive image. With some strong networks for employees of disadvantaged or minority backgrounds, Macfarlanes is looking for great lawyers - no matter where you came from or who you are.

Training at Macfarlanes is said to be as good as it gets. With great client interaction, regular check ins from mentors and seminars from internal and external speakers, the firm is always keen to maintain its calibre of lawyer.

Cocktails and Canapés with Debevoise & Plimpton

Debevoise & Plimpton is a premier law firm with New York roots and a global perspective. Our London office is home to strong and growing teams focusing on everything from high stakes litigation to major M&A deals, often with international and cross-border implications. The London team is drawn from around the world, and it leads on much of the firm's global work, regularly collaborating with colleagues in Europe, Asia and the U.S.

A group of our senior and junior lawyers will be in Manchester on Wednesday 6th November to introduce the firm and the areas in which we work. You will also have a chance to ask us questions about what we do and who we are, as well as our application and selection process, and what it is like to train with us.

Trainees at Debevoise are high-achieving and motivated and have the opportunity to work on challenging, stimulating matters from day one. We believe that's how you build an exceptional team; by posing tough questions, and giving the support and guidance needed to come up with the right answers for our clients. During their training contracts, we seek to offer our trainees exposure to as many of our practice areas as possible so they gain experience of a broad range of work. Some trainees then gravitate towards litigation work and others to non-contentious work. We aim to discover and nurture our trainees' individual preferences and skills in order to match them with our various practice areas.

The firm recruits trainees predominantly from vacation scheme participants. The application deadline for our vacation scheme (2 weeks in spring and summer) is 5th January 2020. This is open to law undergraduates in their penultimate year of study, non-law graduates in their final year, graduates and post-graduates.

This is your opportunity to ask the questions, and have the conversations with us, to help you decide if we are a firm with which you would like to build your future. We will also be pleased to offer you drinks and canapes to sustain you during the evening.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Application Evening

The very prestigious Magic Circle outfit are hosting MULS members at the swanky Midland Hotel for an evening session on what makes the firm unique. A switched on student will know that the Freshfields way of life for trainees is quite different (see the firm profile!) and as such we should have some pressing questions to ask their representatives. In addition, the members at all levels of the firm will be giving you exclusive tips on what they, as the people who actually read the applications are looking for when they hear from you. Every firm has something different about them and Freshfields are absolutely no different. And so, they will be wanting to hear from you on any questions you have about their operation and life as a trainee.

The event will be attended by a number of Freshfields’ partners, associates and trainees, as well as representatives from their graduate recruitment. In hosting this event, Freshfields are aiming to provide students with an insight into life at the firm through hearing about the personal experiences of the panel members. The panel members will also talk about the numerous programmes including workshops and summer vacation schemes which students will be eligible to apply to. Helpfully, attendees will also learn about the application process for Freshfields' training contracts and their other competitive programmes.

Thereafter there will be a Q&A and the presentation will be followed by networking drinks with Freshfields' representatives.

This event will be a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into Freshfields as a firm beyond the name, their application processes and also to gain advice on how to make your application stand out.

Tickets are available to reserve here

Jones Day Question Time

Jones Day Question Time

Jones Day "Question Times" are interactive Q&A's (not recruitment presentations) and a fantastic opportunity to meet our panel of trainees, associates and partners. We want you to quiz our lawyers directly about their first-hand experiences of working in our global law firm; training in our distinctive, non-rotational system; and get to know them better over refreshments afterwards.

You will learn more about our Placement Schemes in the Winter, Spring and Summer holidays; the real work you will undertake; what we look for in the candidates we select; and when and how to apply.

“My first interaction with Jones Day was at a Question Time. I really got a sense of the flat hierarchy by seeing the Partners, Associate and Trainees having an honest, real and open discussion with each other. Students asked lots of questions and I immediately got a feel for how Jones Day is different.” Karl, Trainee

6.00pm: Registration

6.30pm: Q&A panel discussion

7.30pm: Chat with our lawyers over refreshments
